Age and gender refers to the age and the gender of people you reach with your Facebook ad. People who don’t list their gender are shown as “not specified” when you review your ad’s performance.

If you want to target an ad to a specific age or gender, you can create an audience for your ad. You can edit your targeting preferences in Ads Manager.

Following audience types are not available to target ads to people under the age of 18 globally, under 20 in Thailand and under 21 in Indonesia:

·        Detailed targeting (interests, behaviours and demographics)

·        Connections targeting

·        Language targeting

·        Website Custom Audiences

·        App activity Custom Audiences

·        Customer list Custom Audiences

·        Engagement Custom Audiences (event, Facebook Page, Instagram, Instant Experience, lead form, shopping, video)

·        Offline activity Custom Audiences

·        Lookalike Audiences

Existing ad sets that include young people

Starting on 23 August 2021, many targeting options, including detailed targeting, Custom Audiences, Lookalike Audiences and saved audiences that include any of these options, will no longer be available to target ads to people under 18 globally, 20 in Thailand or 21 in Indonesia. As a result, ad sets that use these targeting options for reaching young people may see a decrease in audience sizes or in estimated audience size.

To continue to reach young people, you can create ad sets specifically for young people that only target by age, gender and location.

These changes will also apply to reach and frequency campaigns. If you choose to keep an affected campaign running, we’ll honour the CPM quoted when you created the campaign. If the original campaign’s audience was mainly young people, we recommend that you edit the age range, or remove targeting options that are no longer supported for these audiences, such as detailed targeting and Custom Audiences. You may see fluctuation from the original reach, frequency and CPM estimates, because of the new audience.

Creating new ad sets

You can still target campaigns to an audience that includes young people by using age, gender and location only. If you want to reach young people and older people, we recommend creating separate ad sets for each audience segment to optimise the use of our tools.

For example, you can create a single campaign that includes two separate ad sets. You can create one ad set specifically for young people under the age of 18, that does not use any detailed targeting options. You can create a different ad set for older people and use all available targeting options.

When creating a global campaign, these targeting restrictions will apply up to the age of 20 for people in Thailand and 21 for people in Indonesia. In this situation, you may want to create separate ad sets for each age group and location.

You may not be able to target some age groups depending on your targeting choices. Although you may be able to create an ad targeting these people, the ads may not actually be delivered.

Bear in mind that the maximum definable age on Facebook is 65+, which reaches all people over 65. The minimum age on Facebook is 13, so all ads will be targeted only to people who are at least 13 years of age. Advertisers promoting products with age restrictions in different locations should adjust this setting before submitting their ads.
