Open the Transparency panel. Select All (Command-A), and change the Blending Mode to Multiply. It will look dark, and it probably won’t match, but it will help you determine if the shadow falls in the right place.
Next, you need to change the grey tones to a lighter version of the color underneath it. So if it’s brown, go for a pale brown alteration. Tweak as you find fitting.
