What is a Facebook Custom Audience?

A Facebook Custom Audience lets you target your Facebook ads at a specific group of people who have already interacted with your brand. 

Custom Audiences allow companies to target contextual advertisements directly at consumers who have recently visited their websites, enticing people to purchase while the products are still fresh in their minds.

Using a Facebook Custom Audience allows you to do some pretty cool things, such as:

  • Retarget ads to people who have interacted with one of your Facebook posts.
  • Craft ads for specific segments of your audience, like your bottom-of-the-funnel email list.
  • Upsell new products to people who are currently customers.

Create a Customer List Custom Audience

  1. Add your customer list: You can create your Custom Audience in Ads Manager. Once in your account, go directly to Audiences, then go to Create Audience > Custom Audience > Customer list.
  1. Prepare your customer list: Select the identifiers to include, then add the customer list you want to use for your new Custom Audience and give it a name.
  1. Review your customer list: Confirm that you mapped your identifiers correctly or check to see that all errors are resolved. You’ll get one of the following notifications:
  • The green checkmark symbol means your identifiers were mapped correctly and are ready to be hashed, then used for the matching process.
  • The yellow exclamation symbol  means either that you chose not to include certain identifiers or that some identifiers need to be manually updated. You have higher chances of getting a better match rate to build your audience if you make the corrections before uploading your file.
  1. Upload your customer list: Once your list has been added and is ready for use, select Upload and Create.
  1. When we’re finished hashing your customer list information, we’ll let you know that your audience is ready to use.

Once ready, you can immediately create an ad to reach your new Custom Audience, or create a lookalike audience to find new people who share similar behaviors and interests with your existing customers.

Edit a Customer List Custom Audience

  1. Go to your Audiences.
  1. Select your customer list Custom Audience, then select Update.
  1. Select Replace Customers, Add Customers or Remove Customers.
  1. Upload or paste your updated file or list that includes the information you want to replace, add, or remove from your Custom Audience. (For a list with Customer Value, ensure you include customer value specifically and identify your value column.)
  1. Select Next, then follow the prompts to map your identifiers.
  1. Select Import & Upload. A confirmation update will display once your list has been uploaded.
  1. Select from the suggested next steps or select Done.

You set the rules for where your ads are delivered. Adjust your target audience to be as broad or well-defined as you like, based on the following criteria.

  • Location
  • Demographics
  • Interests
  • Behavior
  • Connections
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Language
