Email list lookalike audiences

You can’t target all customers in your CRM. So, within your CRM, you first need to create a segmented list: a list of selected customers that you will use as the original source for your lookalike audience. The criteria with which you choose who you want to include in your segmented list should depend on the end goals of your ad campaign.Then, you can download your email list as a CSV file.

Once this is done, you can finally proceed and actually create a lookalike audience from your email list. Here’s how.

1.Head over to your Facebook Ads Manager, click on the dots in the top-left corner, and select Audiences.

2. On the next page, click on Create Audience and then select Lookalike Audience from the drop down menu.

3.Now it’s time to actually upload your custom audience source. Next, you will be asked where you’re retrieving the information from to create your custom audience.

4.Once you’ve uploaded your list, you can proceed and choose the Country that you want to target.

5.Now, pick your audience size from a percentage that goes from 1 to 10. With 1% meaning utmost similarity and less reach, and 10% meaning a bigger audience with less similarity to the source audience. A deeper examination of the audience size will follow over the next paragraphs.

6. Now that you’re all set, click on Create Audience and Facebook should take up to a day to actually create it. 

Minimum emails for Lookalike Audience

You might be asking yourself: how many emails should I use to create a Lookalike Audience? Well, there is no right number per sé. Just know that the minimum number of emails of the lookalike source audience is 100.

According to Facebook, you need about 1,000 to 50,000 emails to create an effective Lookalike Audience. The quality of the dataset matters as it determines the profitability of the audience. For example, a list of 1,500 emails of customers who have made purchases from your business is better than an email list of 3,000 subscribers who signed up through your newsletter but have made no purchases.

Emails, although difficult to obtain, have quality data sets that will help you create targeted Lookalike Audiences. However, if you don’t have enough emails to create the custom audience, use your website visitors. Instead of broadly targeting all the people that visited your website, segment them into groups of people that viewed your product pages, as these people have greater intent.
